Alla Prima painting, direct, or wet into wet painting is a single-session painting practice that teaches you to be present in every brush stroke, focusing only on the essentials, ultimately teaching you how to “say the most with the least”. In all subject matter, Julie will challenge you to correctly observe and record the fundamentals: shapes, values, edges and color. We will also discuss good design and the usage of photography as reference in painting, reviewing technology’s limitations and advantages. We will explore the relationships between intended mood and palette: initially painting with the Zorn Palette (a limited primary color palette) and shift to a double primary palette by day 3 (utilizing a warm and cool option for each primary color). We will work quickly the first and second days, warming and loosening up; using repetition as a tool, then work on one extended painting from life or photograph on the third day. Demonstrations will be held daily. The group will engage in formal critiques and Julie will also provide one-on-one critique.
